DR. ALTON A. DAVENPORT, 92, of Lake Kiowa, died on
March 28, 2004, with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 19, 1911, to Albert S. and Maud Johnson
Davenport in Ranger, TX. Throughout the years, Dr. Davenport,
sometimes known as Doctor D. or Double A, had been known
in Cooke County for loyalty and service to the community
in many ways. He was a devoted and loving husband, father,
grandfather, brother and friend. He will be fondly re-
membered by all who knew him and will be greatly missed
by all the many people whose lives he touched.
He graduated from Ranger High School in the Class of 1930,
attended Ranger Junior College, and the St. Louis College
of Pharmacy, becoming a representative for a pharmaceutical
company. He later attended and graduated from the Texas
Chiropractic College in San Antonio in 1939. He began his
practice in Gainesville and several years later closed it
and volunteered for the service, joining the army during
World War II. Following this period, he returned to
Gainesville and began his chiropractic practice. He was
Texas Chairman of the Industrial Relations Committee of
the National Chiropractic Association. He was awarded the
Keeler Plaque by the Texas Chiropractic Association, being
selected Chiropractor of the Year in 1955. He was twice
elected president of the Red River Valley Chiropractic
Association.
Other involvements in Gainesville included membership of
the city planning board, president of the Leopard Booster
Club, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and president of
the Shrine Club, Commander of the American Legion Post,
member of the official board of the First United Methodist
Church and a Sunday School teacher. He also held office
in the district Boy Scouts of America program, president
of the Boys Baseball Club, president of the Gainesville
Riding Club, vice president of the Young Men's Civic League
and president of the Gainesville Community Circus in 1946
and ringmaster of the circus for many years, president of
the Gainesville Kiwanis Club in 1948, also founder of the
Lake Kiowa Kiwanis Club with Art Oake. He was honored on
May 30, 1998, at the Lake Kiowa Lodge by celebrating "Dr.
Davenport's Day" by the Lake Kiowa Kiwanis Club.
His professional care covered many years in his chiropractic
practice, over 60 years. His compassion and love for his
family, patients and friends was his only concern and his
objective in life was serving and helping others. He will
be remembered for his great sense of humor. He closed and
sold his practice in 1998.
Dr. Davenport married Ruby Jo (Trixie) Butler in Nov. of
1933, in Fort Worth, that service officiated by his brother,
Rev. Lester Davenport. In 1987, he married Alta Louis Kuhn.
He enjoyed golf, fishing and gardening before his health
declined.
Survivors include his wife, Alta Louise Davenport of Lake
Kiowa; a son, Ron Davenport and a granddaughter, Brittany
Davenport of Rhome; granddaughter and her husband, Tamera
and Stuart Weiland and two great grandsons, Carson and Corbin
Weiland, all of Montgomery; sister, Inez Moore of Graham;
and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Trixie
Davenport; his parents; sisters, Olive Watt, Wilma Tooley,
Lylia Woods; brothers, Rev. Lester Davenport, Marvin Davenport;
and grandson, Michael Davenport.
