MARIE GALLOWAY VARNEY, 89, was born in Brownwood,
TX on July 20, 1917, and died on March 22, 2007 in
Lawrenceville, GA, with burial in the Mission Burial
Park North Cemetery.
Marie spent most of her life in San Antonio, TX,
and dearly loved the city and its deeply-ingrained
Hispanic culture and history. She was the fourth of
six children of Reuben Vincent Galloway and Augusta
Allison Jackson of Eastland County. She attended
Ranger High School in the Class of 1933 at Ranger,
TX.
Her brothers, Jack (RHS-1926), Jim (RHS-1938), and
Bob (RHS-1940), and her sisters, Margaret Cearley
(RHS-1927) & Kathryn Watzon (RHS-1931), predeceased
her, as did her husband, Rod Varney. Marie graduated
from TWU in Denton and taught elementary school in
Georgetown. When the U.S. entered World War II, she
moved to San Antonio to work as a translator of
Spanish for the wartime Office of Postal Censorship.
After the war, she worked for the Fort Sam Houston
bank and then for many years in computer services at
USAA. In the early 1960s, she married Rod Varney, to
whom she was devoted, and with whom she enjoyed travels
far and wide to ride fast-disappearing trolleys and
trains, an absorbing interest of Rod’s that she shared.
Marie is survived by many nieces and nephews and their
families, who cherished her sense of humor, her love
of children, and her astonishing memory, a treasure-
house of family stories that she loved to share.
