CAROLYN JANE MATTHEWS BUTLER POGSON,
88, passed peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital on
July 9, 2014 in Ann Arbor, MI.
She was born July 19, 1925 in Ranger, TX, the elder
of two daughters of James Ernest Matthews and Johnie
Shults Matthews. She graduated from Ranger High School
in the Class of 1941. Jane attended college at Stephens
College and the University of Texas, Austin, where she
was a Pi Beta Phi. After receiving her undergraduate
degree she married Clarence Jackson "Jack" Butler. They
moved from Austin to McAllen, TX, where Jane taught
English as a second language to wives of immigrant farm
workers, volunteered to provide therapy for disabled
youths, and was a local election worker.
After Jack died in an aircraft accident, Jane moved with
the four children back to Austin. There she completed
her Master's degree and became a Spanish teacher. She
married Robert J. Pogson in 1968. They lived for two
years in Nigeria, and returned to Ann Arbor, where Jane
remained until her death. She taught Spanish in the Ann
Arbor school system, was deeply involved with the Episcopal
Church of the Incarnation, and volunteered for many years
visiting and providing books for prisoners. Jane was a
voracious reader and lifelong learner, and she loved to
share her passion for books. She kept a stash of new books
in the back of her car, ready to give away to friends,
family and whoever might enjoy reading a good book.
At the time of her death, she was survived by: her sister,
Anne Wood (RHS-1947) of Tucson, AZ; four children and two
grandchildren- (1) Jim Butler and Lynn Whitten of Austin,
TX; (2) Chris Butler and Sue Ann Kenmotsu- Butler, and
their children Jane Misako Butler and Xuan Jackson Butler
of Austin; (3) Sean Butler, Los Angeles, CA; and (4) Anne
Butler and her fiance, Hayes McCauley of Austin; and one
step-son, Tom Pogson and Laura Pomeroy Pogson, and their
son, John Paul Pogson, of Homer, AK; and four nieces and
nephews and their children.
