WAYNE LINGLE, 77, was a 1943 graduate of Ranger
High School in Ranger, TX and later attended Ranger
Jr. College.
He was born July 12, 1923, in Breckenridge, TX. His
parents were Luther and Nin (Swain) Lingle. After
his father's death in 1925 he was raised by his aunt
and uncle, Sis and Pee Wee Burnett of Ranger. He
married Annie Vylene Norton in Ranger in 1944. He
was a pipe-line welder, traveled a lot in his work
and loved traveling. He suffered a severe brain
aneurysm July 4, 1971 while he was playing in a
golf tournament in Andrews, TX. The surgery was
too late and permanent damage had been done. He
spent the remainder of his life in VA hospitals and
nursing homes under the loving supervision of his
two daughters. He died in 2000 and is buried at
Oak Lawn Cemetery in Decatur, TX.
He was survived by the two daughters: Prissie Reed
of Rhome, TX, and Cyndy Grove of Decatur; 4 grand-
children and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his wife who died in February of 1972,
and a brother, Raymond Lingle (RHS-1939). He served
in the U.S. Army during WWII in France.
Wayne loved sports and football and golf were his
favorites. He played football at Ranger High during
his schooling there. The family lived in Odessa
and he was a Permian High football fan. His daughter,
Cyndy, wrote that, "One fall, Daddy was working up in
Michigan, and Permian was in a playoff game. He went
down to a pay phone in his hotel and called the Odessa
American to find out what Radio station the game would
be playing on and then called a family friend in Midland
and asked him to lay the receiver next to the radio.
He listened to the entire football game long distance
from a pay phone at the hotel. Afterward, the story
was that he fed quarters into the pay phone until his
fingers went numb.
