Ranger Exes Memorial - RHS Class of 1943

Basil Huckaby E. BASIL HUCKABY, 86, of San Angelo, TX passed away on Feb. 13, 2012 in a local nursing home, with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Basil was born to Robert Gould Huckaby and Stella Booth Huckaby in Ranger, TX, on Aug. 2, 1925. Upon graduating high school, Mr. Huckaby's patriotism urged him to join the military where he participated in WWII. Basil served on board the USS Salt Lake City (1942-1945) where he was a radioman 3rd class. While onboard the USS Salt Lake City, he participated in many maritime battles following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the Aleutian Island campaign, his ship took a direct hit from a Japanese ship, and upon an investigation of the incident, Basil was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon honorable discharge, Basil made his home in San Angelo where he became a prominent businessman, entrepreneur, and had much success in real estate. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Mary Nell Huckaby and his son, Kevin Huckaby, both of San Angelo; his brother, John Robert Huckaby and wife Betty of Rome, NY.
