HARRY E. DEAL came to work as custodian at the "downtown"
Marston Street high school building in Ranger, TX. He was
called "Mr. Moon" as an affectionate nickname by the students.
He was the putty & the grease and the Lysol that kept the
"machine" running smoothly. "Get Mr. Deal." "Ask Mr.
Deal to bring it." Given a gargantuan task, he was the
man who could do it. No task too large, no mess too big,
no floor too cluttered for Harry Deal. The job would be
quietly, efficiently and quickly made manageable and
completed. His coveralls, his white hair (and growing
forehead) and his hearing aid were his trademarks.
Superintendents, principals, teachers and students all
went to Mr. Deal for help. And always got it.
He was born on July 7, 1889, and it is thought that he came
from Pennsylvania in the 30's and Mrs. Deal-- Ellen Irene
Lockhart--from the old Alameda Community. They had a
daughter, Julie Irene Deal (RHS-1958), who was born in
Ranger and still lives there.
Harry Deal died Aug. 7, 1965, in Ranger and his wife, Ellen
Irene Lockhart Deal, died Aug. 22, 1980, at the Western Manor
Nursing home in Ranger. They are buried in the Alameda Cemetery
near Ranger.
