Ranger Exes Memorial - RHS Class of 1941 RJC

Doris Mathena DORIS MAE MATHENA ELROD MERRYMAN, 50, suffered a massive heart attack and passed away on Sept. 8, 1975 at Ranger General Hospital in Ranger, TX, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Doris Mae Mathena was born Nov. 22, 1924 to Rufus Victor & Trudy May Baker Mathena. She was born in the home of her maternal grandparents, Jacob (Jake) and Hannah Ann Griffith Baker in Ranger. Dr. Cabe Terrell assisted in the delivery. Doris graduated from Cooper Elementary, Ranger High School (1941) & Ranger College. Prior to her marriage, she was employed at Joseph's Dry Goods. Doris married Donnal Rex Elrod in Dec. of 1943. While Rex and five of his brothers were serving our country during WWII, Doris worked as a bookkeeper for Ratliff's Feed Store. In 1945 the war ended and fortunately, the six Elrod brothers returned home. Doris and Rex enrolled in Ranger College & were very active members of the student body. Soon after graduating, Doris and Rex moved to Wichita Falls, TX, where Rex continued his college education in the field of Horology. Doris moved from Alaska and California to Texas. She returned to Ranger and was currently employed by her parents at City Floral. Doris was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ranger. At the time of her death, she was survived by her parents, Victor and Trudy Mathena, one sister, Dorothy Helen Mathena Elrod (RHS-1939), one foster sister, Dorothy Ellen Eppley (RHS-1957), husband, C.A. Merryman, two daughters, Vicki Ann Merryman (RHS-1973) and Carol Lynn Phillips (RHS-1977), one grandson, Anthony D. Phillips, one nephew, Tommy Elrod and one niece, Debra Ann Blackwell, a number of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
