PAUL TIPTON HINDS died in his home on Good Friday,
April 15, 2022, at the age of 82. He had recently
undergone open-heart surgery and an extensive stay
in the hospital and rehab. Burial was in Cresson
Cemetery.
Paul was born Dec. 14, 1939 near Cresson, TX, the
fifth of seven children. He graduated from Ranger
High School in the Class of 1957 at Ranger, TX
and was a star athlete in both high school and
college. He played football on the Ranger Bulldog
State Champion team. He attended Hardin Simmons
University on a basketball scholarship where he
met and married his first wife Charlene Smith
Hinds Lombard. After graduation, he began his
military career in 1962, spending 22 years in
the U.S. Army. Paul went on to be a decorated
war hero and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Among his many honors, the U.S. Army awarded him
multiple Bronze Stars for outstanding achievement
while in combat as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
His service included a leadership training role in
the Pentagon and his choice assignment serving as
Professor of Military Science at his Alma Mater
HSU.
Paul is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sandy
Hinds, his daughter Sherry Amburgey and husband
Rick, son Wrey Hinds and wife Connie, and his
stepchildren Tom McKean and wife Melissa, and
Courtney Cadieux and husband Chris. He is also
survived by 9 grandchildren, (being preceded in
death by beloved grandson; Tyler Amburgey) with
his legacy carried on by 3 great-grandchildren.
Paul is also survived by siblings Margie Shaw,
Mary Hinds Horton (RHS-1956) and Ron Hinds (RHS-
1964). Tommy Hinds (RHS-1954) was his late brother.
Paul was a true southern gentleman with a love
God, his family and his country. He was the
patriarch of the family - whenever a family
member had a tough question or decision, they
called on Paul (or PaPa). He had wisdom but was
never judgmental. Paul and Sandy were blessed
with a great life together, traveling to Europe,
Greece and within most of the U.S.
