LINDA MARGARET DRENNAN YARBROUGH, 53, an elementary
school principal at Evant, TX died April 26, 1995 at a
Temple hospital. Burial was in Murphree Cemetery.
She was born on July 11, 1942, in Winnemucca, NV, the first
child of James Donovan Drennan & his wife, Jewel Evangeline
Dorris. After a brief stay in Nevada and in the Lake Tahoe
area of California, her parents returned to Texas and she
attended public school in Baird & Ranger, TX. At high school
she played the French horn in the band and was also a drum
major. She was an honors graduate of Ranger High school in
1960. She attended West Texas State University, Ranger Jr.
College, the University of Texas at Arlington and North Texas
State University, where she received a bachelor of science
degree with honors in math and English in 1971. She began her
teaching career at Northwest Independent School District near
Justin in 1971. In 1972, she began teaching math and English
at Evant. She received her master of education degree in 1980
from Tarleton State University and in 1987 received her admin-
istrator's certificate, at which time she became elementary
principal in Evant. She was senior class sponsor for more
than 20 years, Beta Club and drill team sponsor for many years
and active in UIL academics. A former state champion in public
speaking, she led one-act play casts to state competitions in
1979 and again in 1981. Her 1981 cast placed third in Texas,
tying the 1952 boys basketball team for the highest finish in
UIL competition by an Evant team. She married Leroy Yarbrough
in Olden on May 20, 1961. She was member of the Evant United
Methodist Church.
Survivors at the time of her death include her husband, Leroy
Yarbrough (his Parallel Lives article) of Evant; three children,
Linda Catherine Clary, Hunter Lee Yarbrough and Sarah Ann Yarbrough,
all of Evant; her mother, Evangeline Brewer of Everman; two sisters,
Donna Drennan Shepard (RHS-1962) of Mansfield, and Carol Naegle
(RHS-1966) of Dallas; one brother Jim Drennan (RHS-1964) of St.
Louis, MO; and six grandchildren.
LINDA YARBROUGH REMEMBERED
A ceremony was held October 26,1997 at Evant Elementary School to
dedicate the new playground equipment in memory of the late Linda
Yarbrough, principal of the school from 1986 to 1996. Several
members of her family attended the ceremony, including her children
who unveiled the the marker. They are, left to right, Sarah
Yarbrough, Hunter Yarbrough and Cath Clary. Also shown are Hunter
Yarbrough's two children, Stephanie and Meagan.
