killed a well-liked jailer, which enraged
the towns-folks to take matters into their
own hands, lynching the prisoner.
This is the third courthouse for Eastland. In 1897, when construction was started on
the second courthouse, a horned toad was placed in a cornerstone time capsule as a
joke. After thirty-one years, the courthouse was torn down to make room for the
present one and the horned toad was found alive. The toad died a year later and
was given the name of "Old Rip". It is kept in a locked display case in the
courthouse.
