OVERTON - Overton Theater built around 1935 and closed in 1965, recently sold
& being restored.
PALESTINE
The 1930 Texas Theater in downtown Rusk features
Spanish Colonial architecture. After two fires &
closings, it was renovated into the Palestine
Community Theater for live productions.
PARIS
The 1926 Plaza Theater on the square in Paris
closed in the 70s but now used as a community
theater for live productions.
The 1937 Grand Theater near the Paris downtown square
on Lamar Ave has been closed for years but now in the
process of being renovated.
PECOS
The State Theater in downtown Pecos closed in 2004
after being restored in 1999 & is for sale.
PLAINVIEW - The renovated 1920 Fair Theater presents concerts, live productions,
and beauty pageants.
PORT LAVACA
Port Lavaca Theater is in downtown Port Lavaca (South Texas).
Built in 1936 and survived Hurricane Carla in 1961. It was
restored and now used for the performing arts.
POST
Garza Theater is located on Main St. in downtown Post (West Texas).
It was built in 1916 as the Palace and closed in 1955. Thirty years
later, the Garza opened as a performing arts theater. The Tower is
another old theater in use and located on Main St. in Post.
RANGER

REFUGIO - Rialto Theater was built in 1930 and closed in 1980.
ROCKWALL - The Ritz Theater opened in 1923 on the north side of the square
in Rockwall. After 35 years of operation, it was torn down later to built
a bank.
ROSENBERG - Liberty-Cole Theater is now used for live theater and music.
RUSK
Cherokee Theater is located off the
square in downtown Rusk. Renovated
in 1975 and now used for live productions.
SAN ANGELO
The 1929 Texas Theater in downtown San
Angelo closed in 1971 and is for sale.
Old theater in San Angelo is now the Angelo
Civic Theater.
SAN ANTONIO Website: San Antonio Theaters: Now & Then
The Art Deco-Mayan Revival Aztec Theater is located in downtown
San Antonio near the Riverwalk, opened in 1926 with 2,500 seats
and a 1,700-pipe organ. It closed in 1989 but has been restored
recently. The Aztec has an entry from the street and one from
the Riverwalk.
The Empire Theater is located downtown San
Antonio. It was built in 1913 on the same
spot as another theater built in 1879. The
Empire closed in 1978 but was renovated in
1998 for live shows with 900 seats.
The 2300 seat Majestic Theater was built
during 1929 in downtown San Antonio. It was
renovated in 1989 and live shows were added
in 1996.
The Texas Theater was closed in downtown
San Antonio during the 70s and razed in 1983.
The facade was saved and the building made
into offices.
SAN MARCOS
Gordo's Grill on the square in downtown San
Marcos was once the Holiday Theater.
SEGUIN
The 1931 Texas Theater in downtown Seguin
was a popular showcase for Westerns & still
used for special events. The theater inside
the Texas State History Museum in Austin is
modeled after this theater.
The 1938 Palace Theater of Classic Art Deco
Moderne style in downtown Seguin closed in
2002. It was rebuilt in 1946 after an
explosion.
SHERMAN
The 1940s Texas Theater in Sherman was torn down
and it's Texas neon sign (pictured here) was
moved to The Bob Bullock Texas State History
Museum in Austin.
SNYDER
The 1921 Ritz Theater on the square in downtown
Snyder was built as the Cozy Theater & renamed
the Ritz in 1950s after being rebuilt. It closed
in 1970 but restored in 1995 for live shows.
STAMFORD
The 1936 Grand Theater in downtown Stamford closed
in 2011 and reopened in 2018 with digital projectors
& sound. It is once again showing films.
STRAWN
The Rex Theater in downtown Strawn was gutted by fire in 1953. It had
been rebuilt after another fire. Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Rapp operated the
theater after WWII before they moved their show business to Ranger, TX.
SWEETWATER
The 1935 Texas Theater on the square in
downtown Sweetwater closed in 2009 but
a group has recently bought it to do
renovations.
