Busy downtown Ranger.  All the towns around Ranger became
a city almost overnight, but Ranger continued to be the  
wild and woolly hub of the even wilder boom.              


In 1918, the man directing the horse is Charles Johnson, father
of Joyce Johnson Sawey (RHS-1960).                             


The oil taken from the Ranger field is said to have 'won the
war' and earned for its finders more money than the gold    
fields of California and Alaska.                            


Ranger gained international fame as the town whose
oil wiped out critical oil shortages during WWI. 


Main Street is where thousands of people fought
their way through daily.                       


Ranger oil fields. The muffled throbbing of
scores and scores of engines as the drills 
pounded into the earth gave the whole affair
a hellish, horrible atmosphere.
